"Aren’t they in Zimbabwe?" "Isn't the political situation there too dangerous to make travel to Victoria Falls possible?" These are all valid questions that most travellers ask us all the time, when interested in visiting the Victoria Falls on holiday. Just to answer these questions and to set the record straight, the Victoria Falls can be seen from either the town of Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side or just over the border in Livingstone, on the Zambia side. The views are just as spectacular on the Livingstone side and you will not have any trouble with travel insurance or unnecessary worry regarding the political climate. At Journey Into Africa Tours and Safaris, we always put the safety of our clients first, and therefore we have specially adapted packages to make sure you get to visit one of the 'Seven Natural Wonders of the World' while staying in superb accommodation without missing out on a thing. Our three day Victoria Falls tour departs from Johannesburg International Airport and returns there at the conclusion. This also makes it a simple addition to most of our other South African itineraries.
Information regarding the Victoria Falls: As one of the ‘Seven Natural Wonders of the World’, the Victoria Falls is one of the world's greatest attractions. Victoria Falls is the largest curtain of falling water in the world, stretching an amazing 1708m across. When the river is in full flood during the rainy season, an estimated 545 million litres of water per minute can cascade some 107 metres down into the Zambezi Gorge below. This can send a spray of up to 500 metres into the air, which essentially drenches any onlookers in the area. It also ensures a lush surrounding rainforest. The source of the mighty Zambezi River is some 1300km away in the northwest of Zambia.
The falls are best viewed during the winter dry season, but are visible all year round. From September to November, the views are the clearest with the most rock showing. Between April and May, when the flow is the greatest, views are misty and in windy conditions the gorge is perpetually spanned by rainbows. In midsummer, the humidity can become a bit much with the rains both hard and frequent. The best times to visit during your Victoria Falls travel package is between April/May and August/September when the weather is mild with little rain. Winter (May - August) is dry and sunny. Rainy weather can be expected from November to March/April. An average of 700mm of rain falls annually.
The official language spoken in this area is English. Malaria tablets must be taken, especially during the summer months (November to May). Yellow Fever certificates may be required if arriving from infected areas. Bilharzia should be taken seriously, so avoid swimming in dams and rivers as you travel Victoria Falls. If you are canoeing and cannot avoid the water, towel-off as soon as possible. The tap water is safe to drink - it is only necessary to boil/purify water in remote areas. The currency in Zambia is the Zambian Kwacha while on the Zimbabwe side it is the Zimbabwe Dollar (Z$ = 100 cents). American Express, Diners Club and Visa are widely accepted, whilst MasterCard has a more limited use.
For regional and international flights, visitors are required to pay an airport departure tax of US$25. You can buy the necessary revenue stamp at a commercial bank beforehand or buy it at the airport (US dollars or pound sterling only). This also includes children above the age of two. Please note that at the airport, one may not be able to use US$50 or US$100 notes to purchase the revenue stamp. Activities in the area: The Victoria Falls area is fast becoming the world’s fastest growing adrenaline-capital (after New Zealand) and there are many activities that can be booked for your holiday in Victoria Falls on both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides.
White Water Rafting: This sport commenced on the Zambezi River in 1981 and since then this activity has grown in popularity on a stretch of water that is now internationally acclaimed as the best white water rafting trip available in the world. Riverboarding and half-day white water rafting trip are both available.
Riverboarding: Riverboarding is to the Zambezi, as surfing is to Hawaii. Shorter sections of the river are used, as we tend to stop at designated action spots along the way to surf, ride "whirlies" and "squirt" which is best described as "flying underwater".
Upper Zambezi River Canoeing: This canoeing trail operates above the Victoria Falls on the Upper Zambezi River between the Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe and the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia.
Jet Boating: Jet boating is a thrilling new adventure on the Zambezi River. Conducted in the Batoka Gorge below the Victoria Falls, this pastime allows participants to speed through rapids, rush past gorge walls and spin on the flat water. This can be combined with a spectacular helicopter flight through the gorge and over the Victoria Falls, or with a day’s white water rafting and then meeting the jet boat for a ride before walking (or taking a helicopter) out of the gorge. This is the perfect complement to any Victoria Falls holiday.
Abseil, Gorge Swing and Flying Fox: Abseil down the gorge wall backwards! Throw yourself off the edge of the cliff and freefall for 50 metres before being swung out into the middle of the gorge, ending with several pendulum swings before being lowered to the ground. Fly high across the gorge on a cable slide before being pulled back to the gorge, as there is no walkout. Add this incredible white-knuckle experience to your Victoria Falls travel package.
Bungee Jumping: This is a 111 metre pure adrenaline rush that is conducted off the Victoria Falls Bridge and harshly challenges the limits of the mind, testing the edge of fear by allowing you to leap off the impressive bridge with the Vic Falls behind you and the mighty Zambezi below.
Many other day trips in and around the falls can be arranged, such as helicopter flights or wildlife drives into the Zambezi National Park. Horse-back safaris as well as elephant-back safaris can also be arranged. Please feel free to enquire about adding any of these activities onto your itinerary during your Victoria Falls safari.
