Safaris in Botswana are definitely one of the biggest attractions this land has to offer, but there are a number of other sights and places that you should consider visiting while in the country. From vibrant nightlife to museums, there are a number of activities to cater for all types of visitors, from young to old. The exciting history, culture and beauty make this one of the brightest stars on the African continent. Here is a list of some of the places you should attempt to see in Botswana:

  • Gaborone:
The capital city of this country and widely considered as one of the fastest growing cities on the continent. It lies between the Kgale and Oodi hills on the Notwane River. The city is named after Kgosi (Chief) Gaborone, who led the Batlokwa tribe into the area in the late 19th century. This bright and lively city has a growing economy and is packed full of shopping malls, restaurant, nightclubs and world class hotels.

  • Manyana Rock Paintings:
The paintings can be found at the base of the Kolobeng Hills. A number of artifacts, some dating back to the late stone and iron ages, have also been found here. Although the paintings are slightly faint, children from the nearby village are normally more than happy to point them out to visitors.

  • Matsieng Footprints:
Having been declared a national monument, this attraction will be a true highlight for visitors. Just 35km from Gaborone, guests can visit the fenced off area where a National Museum Guide is on hand to give you the details. According to legend, Matisieng (a giant and ancestor of the Tswana) led his people and animals from the centre of the Earth to inhabit the world. His footprints were left and those of his people were left as the rocks of the Earth were still soft.

  • Kubu Island:
Rising above the Sowa Pan, Kubu Island is a national monument that boasts fossil beaches, ghostly baobab trees and mysterious stone walls. Kubu Island also offers a magnificent view over the pan and has a number of artifacts from other ages including Stone Age cutting tools and 2000-year-old pottery shards.
