WC03 - 8 Day West Coast & Kalahari Tour & Safari

The west coast is also known as the dry sunny landscape of South Africa. West from the Atlantic coastline with its rocky and clean beaches to the east with the Cederberg Mountain range. North is the Namib Desert and south Cape Town with Table Mountain. The west coast with its fishing villages offers many water sport activities, but  the Namaqualand area north of the Cederberg is an arid belt stretching right up to the Namibian boarder which is marked by the Orange River (Rainfall only 140 mm during March and April). Exquisite wild flowers can be seen from August till October every year. In this 8 day tour you will take in all the sights of a perfect west coast tour.

Day 1 of the tour
Departing Cape Town early this morning and after a short photo stop of Table Mountain from the beach at Bloubergstrand we make our way up the west coast. Our route takes us past Melkbosstrand to Mamre which was a mission station in 1808 then on to Darling which is known for its wild flowers and is tucked away between hills, vineyards and golden wheat fields. Yzerfontein is our next stop and is famed for its prolific crayfish reserves and whale watching. From here we will have views across Dassen Island and of Table Mountain in the distance. We then travel past the West Coast National Park which is one of South Africa’s most important wetlands with about 25 million water birds. We end the day in the town of Langebaan where you are at leisure for the evening.

Overnight:     Calypso Villas - Langebaan (Bed & Breakfast)

Day 2 of the tour
Leaving Langebaan today we make our way up to the town of Springbok in the Namaqualand area. This town is surrounded by imposing granite domes which locals refer to as rocky outcrops. It was the copper ornaments worn by the bushman in the Cape that led Governor Simon van der Stel to explore the copper mountains in 1685 and today this is a mining town of note.

Overnight:     Annie’s Cottage - Springbok (Bed & Breakfast)

Day 3 of the tour
Today we depart Springbok and travel to the Augrabies Falls National Park. Few sights are as awesome or sound as deafening as water thundering down the 56 metre Augrabies Waterfall when the Orange River is in full flood. Klipspringer (antelope) and Quiver Trees stand in stark silhoutte against the African sky, silent sentinels in a strangely unique environment where only those that are able to adapt ultimately survive. The 55383 hectares on both the northern and southern sides of the Orange River provide sanctuary to a diversity of species, from the very smallest succulents, birds and reptiles to springboks, gemsbok and giraffe.

Overnight:     Augrabies Rest Camp - Augrabies National Park (Bed & Breakfast)

Day 4 of the tour
This morning you will have an early start as you depart Augrabies and make your way further north to the Kgalakgadi Transfrontier National Park (Kalahari Gemsbok National Park) situated next to the borders of Namibia and Botswana. This is the first operational Transfrontier Park in Southern Africa (3.7 million hectares). As we enter this grippingly beautiful Park a gemsbok may warily scent the air, a lizard will be watching closely or a leopard may be stretched out in the shade. This evening we will enjoy a sunset game viewing drive.

Overnight:     Twee Revieren Rest Camp - Kgalakgadi Transfrontier National Park (Bed & Breakfast)

Day 5 of the tour
After a final morning of game viewing in Kgalakgadi we will depart and make our way south to Upington. We have a relaxing evening at leisure here tonight.

Overnight:     Belurana Guest House - Upington (Bed & Breakfast)

Day 6 of the tour
A day’s drive through the dry Karoo area. You will be amazed at the vastness of these open spaces. We will arrive in the afternoon at the town of Calvinia which is situated in the Hantamberge (Mountains). A relaxing evening at leisure

Overnight:     Katryn’s Guest House - Calvinia (Bed & Breakfast)

Day 7 of the tour
Travelling further south today we make our way to the Cedarberg Mountains. We stop in at the Kagga Kamma Private Game Reserve. The stunning location of the lodge was once home to the Bushmen, today many of their ancient cave paintings are still clearly visible on the rocks, (some dating back 6000 years). This spiritual land offers spectacular scenery, majestic mountains, strange rock formations and phenomenal night skies, where the Milky Way, billions of stars, planets, satellites and shooting stars may be seen by the naked eye. An evening will be spent having a magnificent dinner in the boma outside.

Overnight:     Kagga Kamma Private Game Lodge - Cederberg (Dinner, Bed & Breakfast)

Day 8 of the tour
Checking out today we make the trip back to Cape Town. On arrival in Cape Town we will either drop you at Cape Town International Airport to catch your flight home or your guide will drop you at the accommodation of your choice in the Cape Town area.
