South Africa’s west coast region is vastly different to the rest of the country and will provide a unique South African tour experience. It features a hot, dry climate for most of the year that yields to sudden rains from August to October - resulting in the miraculous spectacle of the annual Namaqualand flower season that sees each and every succulent desert flower burst into full bloom. Namaqualand tours alone account for thousands of visitors each year, but we have decided to include other places of interest in our Cape west coast tours as well. These include:

  • West Coast National Park:
The focal point of the West Coast National Park is without a doubt the tranquil waters of the Langebaan Lagoon. Here, sheltered islands and quiet beaches are home to thousands of seabirds, with salt marshes sheltering great concentrations of northern migrant waders. Particular areas of interest include the Postberg Flower Reserve and the Geelbek Bird Hide, an award-winning eatery and information centre.

  • Augrabies Falls National Park:
There are few things as spectacular as the 56 meter Augrabies Waterfall when the Orange River is in full flood. The native Khoi people christened the waterfall ‘Ankoerebis’, or ‘place of big noises’, from which the contemporary name was derived and the waterfall certainly does live up to its name! About an hour from the town of Upington, The Augrabies Falls National Park comprises 820 sq km of land along the Orange River, as well as a popular game reserve with rhinos as the star attraction.

  • Kgalakgadi Transfrontier National Park:
This large wildlife reserve and conservation area comprises two adjoining National Parks, the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana, occupying a massive 38000 km² of land. Kgalakgadi can be translated to ‘place of thirst’, and rightly so, as the park is right in the middle of the formidable Kalahari. Visitors can expect to enjoy spectacular desert vistas and incredible bird watching opportunities (especially birds of prey).

  • Kagga Kamma Private Game Lodge:
Situated in Ceres in the Breede River Valley, this lodge is a certified malaria-free private game reserve where visitors can learn more about the culture and beliefs of the ancient Bushmen. The farm boasts San rock art that is over 6000 years old and when night-time rolls around, guests gather at the mini observatory to take a gander at the southern night sky.

All our West Coast tours and safaris start and end in Cape Town.
