Any conservationist’s dream, St Lucia is made up of wetlands, mangroves and lagoons. Extensive conservation programs are in place to protect this incredibly fragile ecosystem and visitors can expect to enjoy activities such as snorkeling at Cape Vidal, game fishing at Mission Rock, tours across St Lucia Lake and loggerhead turtle spotting along the region’s coastline. Hluhluwe Game Reserve:
Established in 1895, this is officially the oldest game park in the whole of Africa and the only formal conservation area in Kwazulu-Natal that boast the illustrious Big Five. Here, visitors can expect to enjoy incredible game drives- and walks, as well as world-class bird watching. Shakaland:
Shakaland Zulu Cultural Village is an open-air museum where visitors can experience the culture, rites and customs of the traditional Zulu people for themselves. Fighting techniques and various indigenous crafts are demonstrated and visitors can even join in tasting traditional beer and delicacies. While in the KwaZulu-Natal area on a safari it is definitely worth taking a night away from the reserves to visit Shakaland and take in a bit of South African culture. Further must-visit destinations include the Drakensberg Mountain and the city of Durban.
