About Thornybush Private Game Reserve:
Thornybush Private Game Reserve is a completely private reserve that is situated in close vicinity to the Kruger National Park entrance gates. There are a variety of different luxury lodges in Thornybush, each with their own unique qualities.

Game viewing in South Africa can be enjoyed all year round but the summer months from October - March can be quite hot, with late afternoon thundershowers being prevalent between December and February. In the winter months from April - September there is little chance of rain and it is therefore a bit dry. With a lack of rain, the bush tends to thin out which makes it easier to look for animals. The animals are then also forced to come out in search of water and often end up congregating around the water holes

Game Viewing in Thornybush:
Game drives at most of the lodges within Thornybush are normally done twice a day on 4x4 open game viewing safari vehicles at sunrise and sunset. On these game drives there is normally a stop during the morning drive for a cup of coffee, and on the sunset drives you have the chance to have a break from game viewing with an ice cold drink in your hand as you watch a magnificent African sunset. The sunset game drives then generally continue into the night when you will have the chance to try and find game with a spotlight.

Another option is to also enjoy a short game walk each morning after breakfast with your armed ranger and tracker. These walks will give you the opportunity to learn about the smaller details of the bush, such as animal tracks and the medicinal values of local plants.

Wildlife at Thornybush:
The level of game viewing in Thornybush Game Reserve is incredibly high and it can certainly compare with some of the best reserves in the world. It is renowned for the 'Big 5' and is home to more than 60 species of wildlife, including lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino, hyena and cheetah, as well as a variety of other game species and antelope. The birdlife is also incredible, and this makes for a birdwatchers paradise with more than 280 species being recorded.

What our guests have to say...

We have just returned from our third holiday organised for us by Journey Into Africa. As always we have been delighted with the immaculate organisation of the trip which this time was quite complex. All the aspects of the trip flowed seamlessly from one to another with all the transfers taking place smoothly. Our stay at the Royal Livingstone was relaxing and a good base to do the activities around Victoria Falls. The game drives at Chobe Botswana, were very productive with our guide ensuring we had good sightings of many different animals. Golf at Fancourt was relaxed and a great place to end our stay in South Africa. We would certainly recommend booking with JIA. Dealing over the internet is no problem and queries are always answered immediately. We would certainly return for a fourth time.
