Kapama Private Game Reserve is situated in the Limpopo Province, which is the most northern Province in South Africa, and it occupies a vast area of land between the northern Drakensberg Mountains and the Greater Kruger National Park. It is the largest single-owned game reserve in the region and perfect for a Kruger Safari.
About Kapama Private Game Reserve: The area is renowned for superb safari vacations and Kapama's 13 000 hectares offer all of the big game you could expect to find on an African safari. With 42 mammal species and approximately 350 bird species, there is a huge natural diversity which includes the well known 'Big Five' (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard). Game drives are conducted through the rolling savannah grasslands and riverine forests that make up the backdrop for this beautiful reserve.
Kapama’s history dates back to 1986, when the late Johann Roode purchased his first property in Hoedspruit called Moria Farm. The name Kapama originated from a small railway station across the road and it is believed that Kapama was the name of a chief of a local tribe that lived in the area of Thulumahashe.
Johann initially used the land for cattle farming, but this soon proved to be uneconomical as the environment was harsh and predators and tics took their toll on the cattle. Johann then realised that eco-tourism was the only way to sustain the large property. In 1989 the first lodge was constructed and that was the beginning of what would, in time, become one of the leading eco-tourism destinations in the world. More land acquisitions followed but in 2002 Johann Roode tragically passed away at the early age of 58 after contracting pneumonia.
Johann's wife Lente, and mother of their two children Bernard and Adine, took over the management of Kapama and completed the building of more lodges as well as Camp Jabulani and the Hoedspruit Centre for Endangered Species. With three luxury lodges now available to accommodate you at Kapama you can be assured of one of the finest safari experiences in South Africa.
Game Viewing at Kapama: Using open 4x4 game viewing safari vehicles the specially trained game rangers will delight in taking guests out on twice daily safari drives and guided bush walks. There are also a number of other activities on offer at Kapama as follows:
- Elephant Back Safaris
- Hot Air Balloon Flights
- Wellness Centre
- Hoedspruit Centre for Endangered Species
- Romantic Sleepout in the Kapama Game Reserve

Wildlife at Kapama: Kapama Game Reserve can boast the usual wide variety of game species that are expected to be seen on an African safari. Lion sightings are plentiful as are elephant and the other 'Big Five', members being buffalo, rhino and leopard. You are also likely to encounter other mammals such as kudu, zebra, giraffe, impala, warthog, waterbuck, hyena and much more. There are also over 300 species of bird which will certainly occupy the most avid bird watcher.
