Camping in the wilds of Africa is the way to go - it’s an awesome experience to lie in your tent at night listening to the roar of lions or the lonely cry of a jackal.

Tented safaris in Southern Africa involve accommodation in designated camping sites in national parks, private reserves, private campsites and towns. Facilities are generally good with hot showers, restaurants and washing facilities readily available. Camps further north can be quite basic and sometimes have limited facilities with simple reed enclosures for showers, but most generally do have flush toilets.

On some nights, our African tent safari is conducted in the wild with no facilities. Wild camping is a true wilderness experience and allows us to keep our impact on the environment to a minimum by taking out everything we take in. In keeping with this philosophy, toilets will be of the “dig and bury” variety.

On tent safaris we supply all camping equipment, with the exception of a sleeping bag and pillow. The tents we use are very comfortable (2.2 x 2.2 x 1.8 metres), with built-in insect nets. Set-up and take-down takes a mere five minutes and comfy five 5cm thick mattresses are supplied. All camp chairs have backrests and cooking plus eating utensils will also be provided. Food is kept in sealed containers and cooler boxes/ freezers, ensuring fresh and hygienic food preparation.

On most budget safaris there will be a number of chalet, cabin or hotel accommodation nights. The facilities will be modest to basic and you will generally have access to a twin or quad share room. In some instances you will be required to share bathrooms.

Participation:
An essential part of your tented safari is participation. Putting up your own tent, assisting in packing up in the morning and pitching in with meal preparation is all part of your adventure and when everyone puts in a little effort, the trip always runs smoothly. Team spirit is part of the fun!

Wholesome Meals:
We create three tasty meals per day (unless otherwise specified in the itinerary). This includes every meal from lunch on the day of departure until breakfast on the very last day of your tour. The tour leaders do all the shopping and meal planning for each group and will do their best to obtain fresh produce wherever possible. A cooler box will be supplied for your drinks. Good healthy meals make for happy, healthy travellers!

Local Payments:
A local payment is required on each safari and this will be collected by your tour leader before departure on the first day. This covers a portion of the local operational costs (including entrance- and park fees). This will ensure that a major portion of your tour price goes directly into the economy of the country you are visiting - benefiting local communities and contributing to the preservation of the region.

Your Safari Vehicle:
African conditions are incredibly diverse and we travel in custom-built vehicles that allow us to be completely self-sufficient on safari. Eleven years of experience in the African travel industry has influenced the design of the vehicles and they have most certainly proven themselves on tour! While all vehicles comply with the latest South African safety standards, care has also been taken to cater for the comfort of our passengers – ample legroom and large windows make for a very enjoyable trip indeed. We also use minibuses and all of our vehicles are bought new and serviced by Mercedes and Toyota agents, ensuring trouble-free touring with backup support in practically every town in Southern Africa. Certain National Parks in Botswana are suitable for use of our open four-wheel drive game viewing vehicles which offer unobstructed views and the best possible game viewing experience.

Journey Into Africa offers a number of Overland Budget Camping Tours and Safaris throughout South Africa as well as other regions of Southern Africa.

What our guests have to say...

Overall this was a wonderful experience, everything was beautifully organized. The accommodation at Kwa-Madwala Private Game Reserve was terrific and our guide Wayne was friendly, informative and great fun. We saw many 'stand-out ' things but the visit to the Kruger National Park was most memorable as we saw '4 of the Big 5'. The trip is a never to be forgotten experience.
