A Botswana safari is the perfect way to explore this enormous landlocked country that covers 582 000 square kilometres of Africa’s great interior plateau. It measures more than 1100 km from north to south and 960 km from east to west. The Kalahari covers 85% of the country in the central and south-western areas. The area is largely flat, dry and intensely hot with sandy soils, thin grasslands and areas of woodland savannah that sustain a human population of little more than 1.6 million.

Botswana safari holidays are normally conducted in and around the great desert parks, including the lunar landscapes of the Makgadikgadi Pans, as well as the wetland wonders of the Okavango Delta, the Chobe National Park and Tuli to the east. Botswana’s National Parks number amongst Africa’s wildest and most spectacular, which is why at Journey Into Africa Tours and Safaris, we offer a wide variety of Botswana tour packages that allow our clients to experience this piece of ‘wildlife heaven’.

10 Best Reasons to sign up for a safari in Botswana:

1.    Arts and Crafts:
Botswana boasts a rich history of tribal culture that manifests itself in a world-famous arts and crafts tradition with particular emphasis on basketry.

2.    The Okavango:
Botswana’s most visited tourist region, the Okavango has a unique ecology that is home to a multitude of wildlife and bird species. Visitors can view the area’s singular fauna and flora up close from a mokoro, a primitive dugout canoe that is used as transportation by local inhabitants.

3.    The Central Kalahari Game Reserve:
Typical of the semi-desert conditions that dominate most of Botswana, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve assures visitors sightings of a variety of game in their natural setting.

4.    Makgadikgadi National Park:
The last remnants of a lake that was once the largest in Africa, the various salt pans, islands and baobab trees that make up the landscape are a poignant reminder of how transient ecological environments and the life that depends on it can be.

5.    Tuli Block:
A region that is close to the capital but often neglected on tourist itineraries, the Tuli Block is a fascinating study in geology and ecology as well as one of the prime areas to view the mineral wealth of the country.

6.    Kalahari Gemsbok National Park:
Wild and remote (and difficult to access, except for the well equipped), this is an excellent location for those who seek a true wilderness experience.

7.    Gaborone:
One of Africa’s newest capital cities with the highest economical growth in the region, this location provides a good introduction to the country and its culture.

8.    Birding:
Botswana not only offers a countless number of migratory and resident bird species, it also boasts a bewildering array of raptors and other spectacular birds of prey.

9.    Chobe National Park:
A superb wildlife reserve with the largest elephant population in all of Africa (and therefore the world), Chobe is also blessed with tropical vegetation and greater rainfall than is usually found in this dry country.

10.   Cultural History:
The Botswana government has taken care to preserve its local traditions and protect its cultural heritage that spans many centuries, allowing Botswana safari participants access to everything from Stone Age artifacts, salt pan areas and a wealth of San rock art.
