The Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation had initially run a competition from 2001-2007 to announce the "New 7 Wonders of the World" and that announcement was made on the 7 July 2007. Since then the focus has shifted to finding the "New 7 Wonders of Nature" and on 12 November 2011 Table Mountain was provisionally announced as one of them following a three year race to choose the world's most wonderful natural sites. In the initial results of the competition, in which hundreds of millions of votes were cast worldwide via mobile and internet platforms, the seven provisional winners in no particular order were:
- Table Mountain (Cape Town, South Africa)
- Amazon (South America)
- Halong Bay (Vietnam)
- Iguazu Falls (Argentina)
- Jeju Island (South Korea)
- Komodo Islands (Indonesia)
- Puerto Princesa Underground River (Philippines)
The results will now go through a process where they will be checked and validated independently. Once the voting validation is completed in early 2012, the final winners will be announced and inauguration events will be organised. It was an extremely close finish for Table Mountain after the organizers announced just five days before the announcement that the site was not in the top 10 and would need to fight hard for one of the seven positions. "This is an incredible moment for us", Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille told the euphoric crowd gathered at the V&A Waterfront. "Our mountain, which we cherish, is now officially recognized as one of the marvels of the environment".
